Shipping Heavy Machinery Internationally: What Buyers Need to Know

Importing heavy machinery from China involves logistics planning, customs compliance, and cost management. Drawing on our experience exporting to 50+ countries, here’s what every international buyer needs to know.

Shipping Methods

Container Shipping (20ft / 40ft)

Best for small to medium excavators (up to ~25 tons). Advantages:

  • Lower cost per CBM for smaller machines
  • Regular sailing schedules from major Chinese ports
  • Easy to track and insure
  • Machines are secured and protected inside containers

Tip: Small excavators like the MY80.9 can be disassembled (cab removed, boom folded) to fit standard containers, saving significant shipping costs.

Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo)

Ideal for medium and large excavators. The machine drives on and off the vessel under its own power:

  • No disassembly required — machine arrives ready to work
  • Available for all MINGLIFT models up to 135 tons
  • Ships from Changsha port via river transport to Shanghai/Ningbo

Break Bulk Shipping

For the largest mining-class machines that exceed RoRo size limits:

  • MY1100.10 and MY1350.10 may require partial disassembly
  • Crane loading at port
  • Professional lashing and securing for ocean transit

Trade Terms Explained

  • FOB (Free on Board): We deliver to port, you handle ocean freight and import. Most common for experienced importers.
  • CIF (Cost, Insurance & Freight): We arrange shipping and insurance to your port. You handle import clearance.
  • DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): We handle everything door-to-door. Highest convenience, highest cost.
  • EXW (Ex Works): You pick up from our factory. You arrange all transport.

Key Import Documentation

  • Commercial Invoice and Packing List
  • Bill of Lading (B/L)
  • Certificate of Origin (for preferential tariffs under FTAs)
  • CE/EAC certification documents (for Europe/CIS markets)
  • Insurance certificate

Reducing Total Landed Cost

  1. Check Free Trade Agreements: Many countries have FTAs with China that reduce or eliminate import tariffs on construction machinery.
  2. Consolidate shipments: Order spare parts with your machine to fill container space efficiently.
  3. Plan ahead: Book shipping 4-6 weeks in advance for better rates and space availability.
  4. Choose the right port: Some destination ports have lower handling fees and faster customs processing.
